Thesis title:
Melting processes in recycled continental crust
Supervisors:
Prof. Stephen. F. Foley, Prof. Suzanne Y. O’Reilly
Continental crustal sedimentary material is known from trace element and isotope compositions to be involved in the generation of many volcanic melts in the Mediterranean region. This is most clearly demonstrated in alkaline compositions because the relevant chemical signals are not diluted by further melting of peridotite, but the process may be common or even universal for more voluminous igneous rock types.
Furthermore, in other areas not directly associated with accretionary tectonics, subducted sediments may be involved in the source. An example is the Gaussberg lamproite, which lies on the coast of eastern Antarctica far removed in time and space from any subduction zone. Thus, if continental crust is involved, it must be stored for a considerable time within the mantle and later reactivated.
This project aims to investigate processes that occur during subduction and during the preconditioning of the later volcanic source regions. It is primarily aimed at melting conditions in the Mediterranean, but will have global applications.
Research Interests
(1) Recycling and re-melting of continental crustal sediments
(2) High-pressure-high-temperature experimental petrology
(3) The processes by which crust is recycled back through the mantle wedge and into volcanic arcs.
